I’ve had no less than three people ask me if my 05 Mustang was front wheel drive. All of them swear up and down that Ford made a FWD Mustang, and my insistence that they’re thinking of the Probe gets me nowhere. Wat

One of my friends assumed mine was AWD, and seemed genuinely surprised when I told him no such thing has ever existed.

Some people don’t know jack shit about a subject but insist that they do. Explains political pundits, doesn’t it?
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

Man people just don’t know about cars. I’ve seen several of these on CL listed as RWD.

People know a lot less than they think they do. The same people probably think their car has a V4.

Oh dear. The Ford Probe, such a flop in the U.K. Along with the Ford Cougar.

Ford probes are pretty decent vehicles, but certainly are no mustang.

I’m more surprised that people who think that a Mustang is FWD, even know what FWD means.

That’s not entirely
true
...
Harry Ferguson Research built three, but only as prototypes.

bro every car ever made has both FWD and RWD
FWD stands for Forward Wheel Direction, which is what u want
when u press the go pedal, the engine uses Forward Wheel Direction to move the car... forwards
u must be dumb to want RWD only
RWD is Rearwards Wheel Direction, which u also want
when u press the slow pedal, the gas tank uses Rearwards Wheel Direction to move the car rearwards, or slow down when at speed
dwai ull thank me later wen u learn more abotu cars

I don’t know that prototypes built by outside companies without factory support necessarily count. In any case, I’m pretty damn sure he wasn’t confusing mine with that.

Don’t you *love* it when people are so sure they know more about your car than you?
“Oh wow, Camaro SS?? That’s the one with like 500HP and costs $71k???”
uhhhhh no, maybe you’re thinking Z/28?
“Nah, nah, totally the SS!”
or
“The new Hellcats are nice, but such a shame the Challenger isn’t available in RWD anymore”
don’t worry, it’s still RWD!
“Impossible, I read that it wasn’t!”
....I worked on Charger/Challenger/300, whatever you’re reading is mistaken.

A lot of people assume my Escort is RWD or AWD, because obviously they’re ALL rally cars, so they must have a cool race car layout. I’ve even gone so far as to pop my hood and show a guy that, yes, the engine really is in there sideways.
I do wish it was RWD, though. Dirt roads would be more fun if I could actually sustain a drift, rather than just wiggling back and forth until the wheels get loose.

My best guess is that they heard that the Probe was supposed to replace the Mustang, and then just assumed that it was somehow also called the Mustang. My second best guess is that people be crazy

I figured that was the case, however, I took “no such thing has ever existed” to mean that there has never been an AWD/4WD Mustang, ever.
I’d argue that these Mustangs should count, since it’s said that Harry Ferguson Research built these with the intent to impress/sell Ford on the idea. I do agree that it is up for debate.

I will probably get corrected on this, but here goes: back in the 90s, when Ford and Mazda were, um, closer, the idea was to make the Mustang FWD using, I think, a version of the car that became the Probe. As we all know, that didn’t happen, for good or for ill.

Yep. They thought the Mustang needed to be “more Japanese” so they planned to make a “mustang classic” that would be FWD, because reasons. It became the Probe, but there was never anything FWD badged as a “Mustang”, unless people look at foxbodies and think “why, yes, that is FWD”

Eh, my dad’s Passatt B5.5 had the engine in there front-to-back but it was FWD. Because reasons.

Oh sweet heavens, seriously? People spitting out random HP numbers on various car trim levels are hilarious and usually pathetic. Corvette? Oh, they all make like 500hp and do 0-60 in 3 seconds. The one in the 80s? Oh, yeah! It too!

Could have been the Ford Salesman that told a friend’s Dad that the 6 cyl New Edge Mustang he was looking at had an Inline-V-6......................................

It can be a confusing topic.

Even the galloping pony is wrong. This FWD Mustang concept had fans screaming “wrong-wheel drive layout”, and even featured the grille logo running to the right, the opposite of every production Mustang. While this may have been a goof on the model-builders part, we think it was an omen to stop.

Pretty sure the second one is a photo shop. The first one is just driving backwards. The last one is a Ford prototype model.

Could these people be from the alternative reality where it’s Bernstain Bears instead of Bernstein Bears and where Ford made a FWD Mustang instead of calling it the Probe?
